Ellen White says the thought of being considered a role model to younger fans has “touched her heart”.
The Birmingham City and England striker is one of the most popular players in the women’s game.
She has scored 24 goals in 70 caps during an eight-year international career, helping her country win bronze at the 2015 World Cup.
And she says it is an honour that people consider her and her England team-mates as their heroes.
White explained: “I feel very honoured and privileged to be a Lioness and to play for England.
“I hope me playing for England inspires so many girls and boys to take up the sport.
“A little girl tweeted me recently to tell me that I was her hero. I felt really lucky that I was a role model and that I was her hero. It touched my heart.
“I hope that young boys and girls can now see that there are female role models out there, they can watch them on TV.
“I didn’t see that many women’s games on the television when I was growing up so I feel really lucky that our games are now being shown.
“And that means people can watch women’s football a lot more and hopefully be inspired by our journey, they can see how passionate we are and how privileged we are to be playing for our country.”
