Phil Neville wants the women's game to keep on growing

Lionesses boss Phil Neville has promised to help the growth of women’s football by winning matches and getting more girls involved.

The Manchester United legend was officially unveiled as the new England gaffer on Monday afternoon.

His first match is against France at the SheBelieves Cup in USA in March, while his first home game is a World Cup qualifier against Wales in Southampton on Friday 6 April.

And he wants his team to start as they mean to go on.

Neville said: “The biggest way to get more fans on board is by winning football matches. And that’s exactly what I plan on doing.

“I want us to constantly improve our performance levels and improve the entertainment value of our play. We need to take it to the next level.

“The main thing said to the players was we’ve got to start thinking like winners. And that starts at the SheBelieves Cup. I want to win all three matches.”

Neville, whose sister Tracey is the England Netball head coach, loves the fact women’s football is so popular – and he wants that to continue.

He added: “I want the fans to come on this journey with us.

“I went to two FA WSL games over the weekend and it was great to see so many fans.

“There are a lot of people out there who love women’s football and we need make sure that we keep playing a brand of football they will enjoy watching.

“I have spoken to a lot of people over the last week and a lot of them have said to me: ‘My daughter wants to be coached by you’.

“That is a massive part of my job. I need to help the game keep on growing in whatever way I can.”
